Put the olive oil in a medium saucepan over a medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 8-10 minutes, until softened.
Add the garlic and cook over a low heat for 1 minute, then add the tinned tomatoes, tomato puree, sugar, soy sauce, oregano and bay leaves. Add a splash of water and season, then leave to simmer for 40 minutes until thickened. Remove the bay leaves.
Meanwhile, bring a large pan of water to the boil. Cook the pasta to packet instructions, then drain.
Stir the chopped basil through the pasta sauce, then add the cooked pasta. Divide between 4 plates to serve.
