Waste not, want not. While we’ve foolishly been tossing our pastry scraps in the bin, we could’ve been making these…
It's nearly pastry week on Bake Off! Hurrah. Whether it’s a tart case or flaky pie crust, if you’re inspired by the show to make your own pastry, here are 11 ideas to make the most of those leftover pastry scraps.
1. Bite-size breakfast pastries
Roll out your pastry scraps into a rectangle and sprinkle with cinnamon and sugar. Roll up like a Swiss roll and cut into 3cm pieces, then bake until crisp. Delicious dipped in melted chocolate (though isn't everything?).
2. Cheesy crackers
Pastry + cheese = lip-smacking satisfaction. Roll out your pastry scraps until thin, and cut into small squares. Sprinkle with parmesan and salt and pepper, and pop in the oven. Once cool, top with fresh herbs or olive tapenade if you’re feeling fancy.
3. Forget the crumble topping
Use strips of pastry scraps to top small ramekins of baked fruit instead… Yes, they're only small, so you can have two.
4. Spanish piggies in blankets
The ultimate accolade for any sausage is surely to be swaddled in pastry. Wrap scraps of puff pastry around chunks of chorizo, sprinkle with poppy seeds and bake.
5. Happy sundaes
To be eaten any day of the week. Sprinkle pastry with demerara sugar and cinnamon, bake, then crumble over vanilla ice cream (toffee popcorn and grated chocolate optional).
6. Mini mille-feuille
Give leftover puff or filo pastry a French makeover. Cook rectangular pieces of pastry – it doesn't matter if they're irregular shapes – and layer up with lemon curd, cream or blueberries. Oh la la.
7. Thumb-print cookies
Take inspiration from these little cookies and fill tiny balls of leftover puff pastry with a square of chocolate or blob of Nutella. Because chocolate and pastry – well, why wouldn't you?
8. Mini deep-dish pizzas
Admittedly, this recipe originally uses tortillas for the base, but we reckon it'd be just as good with pastry scraps. Make sure you grease your muffin tin generously to avoid them sticking.
9. Garlicky cheese straws
Sure to turn your kitchen into a party (even if you're the only one invited). Cut puff pastry trimmings into thin sticks, then line them up on a baking tray. Top with grated pecorino cheese, drizzle with garlic oil, and bake until they're ready to snap.
10. Jam tarts
Because jam tarts are just the excuse you need to laden sugary fruity goodness on to bits of pastry.
11. Do the roly poly
Stuffed with chopped walnuts, almonds and pistachios, this is one recipe to go a bit nuts over.
