Our favourite kind of berries

Strawberries are here! We can't wait to be sat in the garden, a bowl of strawberries at the ready, the sun beaming down on us – we can dream right?

British strawberry season has officially begun, which means it's time to be picky and choosy, whether you're heading to the supermarket, or going to a good old-fashioned Pick Your Own.

Let common sense prevail and choose the freshest, shiniest fellows with bright green caps. Strawberries don't ripen after they've been picked, so avoid anything looking a bit white. Remember that bigger isn't always better, and there'll often be more flavour in the smaller strawberries because they aren't diluted with so much water.

Store them in the fridge, unwashed and unhulled, and ideally on a single layer of kitchen paper to avoid them becoming a mushy mess. Strawberries will happily keep in the freezer for up to six months: just hull them and throw them into a sandwich bag.

When they're ready to hull, watch the video below – it's one of the simplest ways we've ever come across.

Eat them as they are: raw and perfect. Or check out some of these delicious ideas …
