The only competition where leaving with egg on your face is a good thing, London's annual Scotch Egg Challenge will be rolling into The Canonbury Tavern this Tuesday night. Featuring chefs from some of the city's greatest restaurants, the competing entries will be judged on three criteria – taste, texture and appearance – before the winner is announced and the crowd gets to feast on the leftovers.

Previous finalists have involved chorizo and fennel, curried smoked haddock and wild boar, heart and liver varieties, so you can be sure of a few eggciting tasters.

7:30pm, Tuesday 20 October. Admission to watch is free, £25 to compete.

Pop along to Cuisson's POPdown

If you thought pop-ups meant queuing for an hour to stand around eating overpriced burgers in a cold, fluorescent-lit garage, you need to get yourself to Cuisson's POPdown at Waterloo Vaults – stat.

Hosted by the fine-dining caterer supremo Cuisson, the interactive subterranean dinner promises a totally different experience. Chef Chavdar Todorov will serve up four or five courses of elegant, creative seasonal dishes (think cured mackerel with lovage emulsion, daikon and horseradish snow, or carrot cake with coconut custard and brown butter brittle), plus modernist cocktails and plenty of surprises along the way. Even better, everyone sits down to eat at 7:30pm – so no need to stash emergency biscuits in your bag.

Tuesday 20 October to January 2016. Tickets £39. Book here.

Eggs benedict, your days are numbered. We're putting money on Asian brunches being huge news this winter – and as if to prove us right, brand new breakfast vendors Chinese Laundry have opened this month in Islington, ready to throw some serious shade on the usual avo toast and pancakes.

Inspired by 80s Chinese family life, the kitschy all-day dining room promises a slice of nostalgic home-style cooking. Expect plenty of fermenting, ageing and low-and-slow cooking, with breakfast offerings like silken tofu curd, crispy fried Youtiao bread and freshly made soy milk. "Dishes here take time and heart," they explain. We're pretty sure it'll be worth the wait.

Open now.
