Patty & Bun: London

An intimate atmosphere, British ingredients and perfect burgers adorned with unexpected sauces (roast chicken mayo, anyone?) make this little restaurant a firm London favourite. Did we mention it offers takeaway, too?

 

Where: James Street and Liverpool Street, London with one opening in Hackney later this year

When: James Street: Monday-Saturday: noon-11pm. Sunday: noon-10pm.

Liverpool Street: Breakfast is Monday to Friday, 7:30am to 9:30am. Lunch and dinner are from Monday-Wednesday: 11:30am-10pm; Thursday-Friday: 11:30am-11pm; Saturday: 11:30am-9pm; Sunday: 11:30am-6pm.

Go if: you're an Entourage fan: the signature burger, the 'Ari Gold' for £7.50 is a delicious combination of beef, cheese, lettuce, carmelised onions, smoky P&B mayo and a brioche bun. Try with the rosemary salt chips

Almost Famous Burgers: Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds

Noisy and unpretentious – you order your burger from the bar and collect cutlery yourself – this is a go-to spot when you're craving greasy, dirty burgers. Would you like deep fried onions in that burger? Yes. Yes, we would.

Unlike some burger joints which unashamedly try to recreate a US-style burger, Honest Burgers is proudly British and junk-free, and it only uses locally sourced meats and market vegetables.

The 'make-your-own burger' concept here is fun as you tick off your favourite ingredients to sandwich between two soft buns. Veggie options are available, as are more exciting burgers like venison, wild boar or Welsh lamb and mint.

Boss Burgers: Leeds and Harrogate

Purveyors of handmade, gourmet burgers made from grass-fed Yorkshire cattle at good prices – the classic burger is a fiver – served up in a laid-back atmosphere.

Go if: you like your burgers with a cheesy twist: menu offerings include a beef patty topped with goat's cheese, chilli jam, rocket and mayo and the Moozadell (beef with mozzarella, slow-roasted peppers, caramelised onions, rocket and mayo)

Burger Meats Bun: Glasgow and Edinburgh

Serving up locally sourced Scotch beef from The Aberfoyle Butcher, this Scottish joint is also known for delicious free-range chicken burgers and their veggie spiced bean patty. You can even opt for a gluten-free bun.

 

Where: Forth Street, Edinburgh and W Regent Street, Glasgow

When: Tuesday-Sunday: noon-9:30pm

Go if: you like your burgers top of the line but your ambience low-key. Don't miss out on seasonal and daily specials like the Jamon en Llamas (chorizo and pork patty, serrano ham, manchego, basque piperrada, baby spinach and aioli) or their Mo'Rockin Lamb (lamb patty, tagine of shoulder, apricot chutney, carrot and cumin, honey and harissa mayo)

 

Rox Burger: London

Fresh, classic fare with a Brazilian twist, this Lewisham burger joint only opened in 2014 but already has a firm fan following.
