Are between the ages of 18 and 34? If so, then you're a millennial and we've got some sad, sad news for you

Being a millennial is really quite far from ideal. 


There are the university tuition fees, the never being able to buy a house, and the graduating into a brave new sea of unpaid internships.


And now? 


Apparently, they can look forward to having to workout harder.


A new study from York University's faculty of health has discovered that this age group, particularly those who are 25 years old – also known as Generation Y – need to eat less and exercise more than their parents did at their age, in order to avoid obesity.


The study analysed the dietary data of nearly 36,400 US adults collected by the National Health and Nutrition Survey between 1971 and 2008. Physical activity frequency data of 14,418 adults between 1988 and 2006 was also used.


The study showed that taking into consideration the self-reported food in-take across this specific period of time, people were 10% heavier in 2008 than in 1971, and about 5% heavier in 2006 for the given amount of physical activity level than in 1988.


So why is this? 


Because, according to the academics who ran the study, weight gain is more than a simple equation of energy in versus energy out. 


Professor Jennifer Kuk from the university's school of kinesiology and health science, said: "This is because weight management is actually more complex than just 'energy in' versus 'energy out. That's similar to saying your investment account balance is simply your deposits subtracting your withdrawals and not accounting for all the other things that affect your balance like stock marker fluctuations, bank fees or currency exchange rates."


Essentially, there a whole load of other lifestyle and environmental factors at play when it comes to keeping trim – from pollution to gut bacteria, the timing of when we eat, genetics and even exposure to light at night-time. 


"Ultimately, maintaining a healthy body weight is now more challenging than ever," she concludes.
