London's Polpo – one restaurant that has signed up to the initiative

If you're eating out over the next couple of months you can help the homeless while you're at it – thanks to this year's StreetSmart campaign, which is running from now until 31 December.

The initiative has been running since 1998, and this year the charity's idea is simple: when you eat out at participating restaurants, you can choose to add £1 to your bill which goes straight to charities helping people sleeping rough across the UK.

Some of our favourite restaurants, including London's PolpoBocca di Lupo, and Moro, as well as Leeds' Crafhouse and Manchester's The Lowryare already on board.

It's being supported by a load of famous foodies too: MasterChef judge and Michelin-starred chef, Marcus Wareing, is just one culinary star backing the idea. "StreetSmart is a fabulous charity that remembers the homeless at a time of year when we should be thinking of others," he said.

Another foodie supporter is The River Cafe's Ruth Rogers. "The charity has just kept growing and has become a bit of a family tree among restaurateurs," she added.

Even Stephen Fry is getting in on the action …
