Every year the Christmas feast culminates with the ritualistic lighting of the pudding

And every year your uncle somehow manages to make a mess and nearly set granny on fire. Luckily, we’ve put together an easy GIF guide to ensure success every time.

Step 1

Make sure you have all the key ingredients to hand. You’ll need some brandy, a ladle, a candle (or something similar to heat the ladle) and of course the delicious Christmas pud.

Step 2

Pour out roughly two tablespoons of brandy into the ladle.

Step 3

Carefully heat the ladle over a flame to warm the brandy, making sure not to hold your hand too near to the flame as that’s a surefire way to ruin Christmas day! Heat the ladle for around 20 seconds otherwise the brandy may not light and you’ll be left with a very soggy pudding.

Step 4

Gently tilt the ladle so that the brandy catches on fire. Be careful not to tip the ladle too much otherwise you’ll end up covering your candle in brandy.

Step 5

Turn the lights down low, get your best “oohhs” and “ahhhs” ready and pour the brandy over the pudding.
