What actually is a salad? Does it have to have leaves? Not necessarily. Low in calories? Not always, unfortunately. Always cold, perhaps? Nope

No one actually knows what makes a salad a salad, but don’t let that stop you from eating one. Here are some utterly delicious dishes that we’re calling 'salads'.

1. Tuna niçoise

A fancy version of the classic, this niçoise salad is made with baby new potatoes. Yum.

2. Sausage and new potato salad

That's right, chop some sausages up and mix in with some stuff and you get to call it a salad. A hearty one at that.

3. Mild spiced lamb salad

This is a super-quick north African-inspired salad that includes delicious harissa – a spicy, garlicky, oily paste.

4. Asparagus and halloumi salad

Salty, squeaky halloumi meets earthy, delicate asparagus in this rousing symphony of a salad. It's got us feeling all poetic, like.

5. Roast chicken Caesar salad

Hail Caesar and thy crunchy croutons and creamy dressing.

6. Chicory, watercress and roquefort salad

Throw it all together on a plate, or if you're feeling posh, you could arrange the ingredients artfully on chicory slices and serve as canapés.

7. French bistro salad

Eggs and bacon, now that's our kind of salad. Throw in some salad leaves and drizzle on some dressing and you've got yourself a delicious light lunch.
